THE
WHOLLY GRAIN
by Zoe Caywood
Newsletter Volume 15
past issues here!
Springtime is nearly here—the Dutchman's Breeches are
about to show off their pink pantaloons, the turkeys will soon be
gobbling, and as the dogwood buds are forming, we're planning our
outdoor adventures. We can't WAIT to get out in the wonderful, beautiful
outdoors—on the trail, casting a line from the creek bank, paddling
around the lake, peddling down a country by-way, putting up a tent in
the campground, or running the convertible top down, and feeling the
sunshine bursting forth.
With this newsletter, I'm bringing you
a
recipe for the
equestrians out there and while you have the
ingredients out,
a
granola trail mix,
to put in your pack—they both use similar War Eagle Organic Grains. As I
grew up riding, showing, and racing horses, there has always been a
special place in my heart for horses. There's many other special
physical places that also remember my pony and horse days from being
bucked off, kicked, bit, scrapped off on tree limbs, dumped in the
middle of a pond, left stranded at the neighborhood grocery store,
out-raced by a train, and ran over, just to name a few of my
experiences. My sister still owns horses, and she shared her recipe for
horse treats. The young trail rider pictured on the showy paint mare,
Fable, is her granddaughter. So throw out your troubles and woes, and
pack up the War Eagle horse treats and War Eagle granola for yourself
and let's HIT the trail. Wishing soft landings to all!

WAR
EAGLE RAW WHEAT GERM
Wheat germ is the heart of the wheat berry which is sifted out
in the modern milling process. It is an excellent source of
insoluble fiber (1 gram of fiber per tablespoon), vitamin E,
magnesium, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, thiamine, and zinc. It
is also a source of coenzyme, Q10 and PABA. War Eagle Wheat Germ
is raw—it is not toasted wheat germ. The flakes are golden and
sweet, and makes a nice topping on all casseroles and cereals.
Always store raw wheat germ in a sealed package in the
refrigerator or freezer.

WAR EAGLE CREEK TRAIL MIX
The more variety of nuts, seeds, and fruit you use boosts the flavor
presence. I love the new (to our part of the country) dried mixed
berries that have cranberries, cherries, and blueberries.
3 cps
War Eagle Thick Rolled Oats
1 1/2 cp nuts or seeds
(almonds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds, or
pumpkin seeds)
1 1/2 cp mixed dried fruit
(cranberries, blueberries, apple slices, papaya, mango, pineapple,
cherries, banana chips, or the pre-packaged mixed berries or chopped
dried fruit)
1 1/2 tsp
cinnamon, ground
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cp
honey
1/4 cp butter
Lightly coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. In a large bowl,
mix together oats, nuts or seeds, cinnamon, and salt. Spread over baking
sheet. In small bowl, heat honey and butter in microwave about 30
seconds or until melted. Drizzle over the oat mixture.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 15 – 20 minutes, stirring
occasionally. When stirring, especially bring the mixture from the edges
to center. Keep a watch as you don't want to burn the mixture.
Remove from oven; mix in dried fruit. Let dry overnight; store in sealed
plastic ziplock bags. |
