Steel-Cut Oats

Oats Bread Mix

WHY WE LOVE IT:
Oats with a chewier, nuttier texture, also sometimes called Irish or Scottish oats, steel-cut oats consist of the entire oat kernel (similar in look to a grain of rice) sliced once or twice into smaller pieces to help water penetrate and cook the grain.

HOW WE SERVE IT:

Cooked for about 20-30 minutes, steel-cut oats create a breakfast porridge that delights many people who didn't realize they love oatmeal!

What a great deal for an organic hot cereal:
1 lb cello bag only $2.05
3 lb cloth sack only $5.80

Spring Cleaning!

Winter is almost over, and warmer, longer days are ahead. One ritual of spring is going through the house and getting rid of junk and clutter. Unfortunately, we sometimes have junk and clutter in our kitchen too--food that may not be at its freshest peak. This month we are featuring a couple of recipes that will allow you to "recycle" those foods instead of throwing them away.

St. Patrick's Day Celebration

Join us at the Mill for our St. Patrick's Day Celebration, March 13 and 14, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. We will be serving up some traditional Irish treats on our menu and feature live Irish music and special sales on every floor. We hope you can come for a visit!

Buttermilk Banana Bread
Banana Bread
Mushy, brown bananas are not very appealing, but don't toss them out! They make this bread moist and delicious. The buttermilk and whole grain flour add even more depth and flavor.

You Will Need:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°
  2. Coat loaf pan with non-stick spray.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together flours, baking soda, salt and brown sugar.
  4. In medium bowl combine the oil, egg, buttermilk and vanilla.
  5. Fold this mixture into dry ingredients until just blended, stir in bananas.
  6. Pour batter into loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick placed in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool on rack. Enjoy a slice with sweet cream butter while still slightly warm, or freeze the loaf as a treat for later.
Makes one loaf of bread.

French Toast Sticks
French Toast Sticks
There is nothing better than home baked bread, but it does begin to lose its fresh quality after a few days. This day-old bread is perfect for French Toast or "Pain Perdu" (lost bread). Treat the kids to this special breakfast as part of their Spring Break.

Here’s what you need:
  1. Mix eggs, milk and vanilla in bowl. Beat Well.
  2. Dip slices of bread in egg mixture.
  3. Melt butter in skillet then brown bread slices on both sides.
  4. Sprinkle with sugar & cinnamon and serve with fresh fruit or warm syrup
Serves 2 - 3.
